Catnip (Nepeta cataria)
Catnip is one of the favorite traditional cold and flu remedies. It is a powerful diaphoretic used in feverish conditions, especially in bronchitis. As a carminiative with anti-spasmodic properties, catnip eases stomach upsets, dyspepsia, flatulence, and colic. It is the perfect remedy for diarrhea in children. Its sedative action on the nerves add to its generally relaxing properties.
Catnip is a delicious tea on its own or in a blend. It has a slight mint flavor and is often used as a flavoring in sauces, soups, and stews.
Catnip can be taken as tea, an extract, lightly sprinkled on food, or as an herbal pillow for people and of course a gift for your cats.
The herb is also strongly anti fungal and a bactericide for Staph infections, as well as a close chemical relative to a number of insect repellents that affect mosquitoes and termites.
Makes a great tea for unwinding children as well.
Not recommended for use while pregnant.
