German chamomile. Scientific name: Matricaria recutita (Matricaria chamomilla) is used in herbal medicine for a irritable bowel syndrome, It is also used as a mild laxative and is anti-inflammatory and bactericidal. This herb is a relaxant for tense muscles, stress, anxiety and exhaustion; aids in sleep, digestive and bowel problems. It also is beneficial for balancing acidity and acts as an appetite stimulant. The Cherokee Indians used it in cases of colic, bowel complaints and vomiting. Although a stimulant, Chamomile is one of the finest nervine herbs there is. It is a soothing tonic which is sedative in nature and used for the nerves.

Major chemical compounds present within chamomile include apigenin and alpha-bisabolol

Apigenin has demonstrated strong chemopreventive effects, while alpha-bisabolol has been shown to have antiseptic properties, anti-inflammatory properties, and has also been demonstrated to reduce pepsin secretion without altering secretion of stomach acid

Because chamomile can cause uterine contractions that can cause miscarriage, the U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends that pregnant and nursing mothers not consume chamomile.

For the most part unless mentioned otherwise, each tea bag will make 2 to 3 cups of tea; If loose herb tea, two ounces will make about 23 cups of tea . One ounce of just an herb is about a sandwich bag, and sometimes a little more. If it is a root herb such as burdock root it is heavier, thus an ounce would be about a quarter of a sandwich bag. Comfrey, plantain and nettle leaves would be in a quart size bag.
