City Gardens is a string of urban vegetable patches, based in Old Town Garden City where we have a half acre plot that was once part of the original Chinese Gardens. City Gardens goes beyond organic standards to provide high quality vegetables. We do not use caustic pesticides, toxic fertilizers or deadly weed killers. We use our sweat and love to cultivate our gardens, weeding by hand and harvesting without big gas guzzling machinery, heart and hands working together to do the dirty work.
Our gardens reuse the wisdom and technology of our vegetable growing heritage, focusing on traditional vegetable varieties, the kind bred for taste, like the Bulls Blood Beet, French fingerling potatoes, Genove's basil and Brandywine tomatoes. Along with these old-fashioned veggies comes a nearly forgotten way of life. City Gardens wants to keep alive the flavors, aromas, and food traditions of the past.
HOW DO I GET CITY GARDENS VEGETABLES? Like a newspaper, you pay up front and then receive a weekly bounty of vegetables. The season is divided into two 8 Week Subscriptions: the Spring and Fall. The SPRING subscription begin in May. The FALL subscription begins in July. You are invited and encouraged to participate in both. You will receive 8 to 10 different kinds of fresh, locally grown veggies each week.
