Comfrey (Symphytum officinale L.) Perennial herb, is native to Europe.. Large turnip like root, broad velvety leaves and tiny bell shaped purple flowers which appear in early summer. If kept deadheaded, your comfrey may bloom from early spring to frost.
Comfrey grows very fast; the first year it will produce lots of leaves, the flowers will appear the 2nd year. Comfrey is a very important herb, to both herbalists and gardeners.
Bees also enjoy it very much!
Gardeners enjoy it as an interesting specimen plant, and the fact that it requires very little care. It is also used by some gardeners as "green manure".
Herbalists use the leaves for a variety of skin ailments. Comfrey should be used externally only.
I use comfre in salves for dry, itchy flaky skin.
Note that the FDA has not endorsed the use of comfrey medicinally; information is provided for reference only.
Direct seed your comfrey early spring, in well worked soil which has been amended with rich organic matter. Plant comfrey 2-3 feet apart, as this will be a fairly large plant, 2-3 feet in diameter, 2-3 feet in height.
SAVE YOUR OWN SEED - let the seed pods dry on the plant after flowering. when the dry pods begin to open.
One pack contains 5 fresh viable comfrey seed, harvested for the 2014 growing season
