History: The Meskwaki people of North America took crampbark for cramps and pains throughout the body, while the Penobscot used it to treat swollen glands and mumps. They were then adapted into many patent remedies sold in 19th-century America. The plant was known in the 14th century, since Chaucer suggests eating the berries. In Europe, cramp bark has been mostly a Polish and Romanian folk medicine. The name guelder rose probably came from its associations with the Dutch province Gulderland where it was first commercially grown.
