CSA: Nesbitt's Nursery
Our growing practices comply with Food Alliance and organic standards. We choose heirloom varieties based on their flavor and nutrition, and many of the crops will be harvested the same day they're to be picked up. If interested, please contact us to arrange a firsthand tour of our farm operations.
What is CSA? Through CSAs, local households and farmers work together to share the responsibility of producing and delivering fresh food. Members support the farm and are entitled to a "share" of the season's harvest. Once harvesting begins, members pick up a weekly box of fresh foods which may include produce, fruits, herbs, and more.
What share sizes do you offer? While the week-to-week weight and volume of a box's produce will vary through the season, a Full Share's box best feeds two to four people each week. A Half Share's box will feed one to two people each week. Shares are often split among households and may also be supplemented with an Bread Share, Herb Share, and/or a Winter Box.
What are the Bread Share, Herb Share, and Winter Box add-ons? With a Bread Share, you'll receive one organic loaf of wheat bread freshly baked by Oasis Eatery. An Herb Share adds an additional healthy bundle of fresh and/or dried herbs with your box each week. With a Winter Box, at the season's end you'll receive a one-time additional box of fruits and vegetables--more than 35 pounds worth--suitable for long-term storage. Discounts are available for members selecting multiple add-ons.
How long is the share season? Nesbitt's CSA runs sixteen weeks, typically beginning the first Wednesday in June through the third Wednesday of September.
When and where can I pick up my box? You may pick up your produce at Nesbitt's Nursery during scheduled weekly timeslots. If interest warrants, other drop sites may be arranged.
Do you reuse the share boxes? Yes, you'll receive two exchangeable boxes. Each week, one filled box will be ready for pick up; please return the other then. Replacement boxes are $2.
What if I can't make my pick up? Please provide at least 48 hours notice, and we'll accommodate another pick up time during business hours -- though do know that we plan for the week's harvest to be freshest on Wednesdays. Also, with at least two days prior notice, a double share to make up for a missed week can potentially be arranged. Alternatively, let us know if you'd ever like your share donated to a food bank.
What if the growing season is interrupted by bad weather? You'll receive a prorated refund for any missed weeks.
Is there a deadline for signing up? Not officially, but total available shares are limited -- so reserve yours early.
Can I pay in installments? Yes, please see the signup form at nesbittsnursery.com/csa for details.
May I subscribe for just part of a season? Unfortunately, no, your subscription provides support for an entire growing season. If you find yourself unavailable for part of a season, please consider splitting your membership.
Do you provide recipes and cooking tips? While you're welcome to ask us for our favorites and tricks, we'll plan to provide an optional forum for fellow members to share their questions and wisdom. If you're all together unfamiliar with eating seasonally, we have plenty of resources for you at Nesbitt's -- some of which will be discounted for CSA members.
What about canning or freezing? If you'd prefer a greater quantity of one crop preserving while it's in season (instead of the wide variety of produce you would typically receive in your box each week), we may be able to accommodate you if the harvest permits it. Please contact us at least a week or two in advance to discuss the possibility.
Do you take suggestions on crops and varieties to grow? Yes, we always appreciate your input.
How do I get a discount when I refer new members? Make sure new members enter your name at the "Where did you hear about us?" blank on their signup forms.
