As mentioned in our farm description, we are prototyping a new method of sustainable growing. Even though risk is always part of the CSA experience (e.g. weather conditions resulting in small harvests), we want to make sure our prototype amounts to as little risk as possible for our customers in case things don't go as planned. As such, not only are we offering shares at about half the cost of most farms in the area until we get the hang of things, but we are also open to our customers requesting some or all of their CSA share price back at the end of the season if they have been unhappy. The advantage of this arrangement for us is that we get to gauge our production output without the uncertainty as to whether our customers will end up getting their money's worth, and the advantage to our customers is a low-risk and low-cost way to help a small farm and try some amazing local produce in the process -- we anticipate being able to offer greens (lettuce, spinach, chard, collards), root veggies (radish, carrots, beets), herbs (dill, basil), and other various goodies throughout the course of the season (tomatoes, peppers, beans, etc).
