Deerfield Ranch is a 65-acre family farm located in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, just outside of Rome, Georgia. Deerfield Ranch was established in 2007 with a mission to preserve, promote and protect endangered breeds of both large and small animals.
To date, we have focused our efforts on two Heritage breeds, the Mulefoot Hog and Jacob Sheep. Deerfield Ranch is committed to ensuring the preservation of these two endangered species through a controlled selection process that promotes only the highest traits and qualities within the breed lines. Having dealt with the difficulties of finding unrelated bloodlines for breeding pairs in species whose registered numbers are as small as 200, we have put together multiple unrelated breeding groups so that we can provide customers with the convenience of a single source for breeders. Currently, we market breeders and feeders, as well as the products of these animals (i.e., meat and fleece). The meat of both of these species has consistently topped taste tests that have included both Heritage and commercial breeds. By educating others to the exceptional meat quality and other merits of these breeds, we hope to create a demand for them and their products that will ensure their survival well into the future.
The American Mulefoot Hog is solid black with occasional white points on its nose and feet. Its most distinctive feature is its solid hoof, which resembles that of a mule or horse. Mulefoot are docile and friendly and thrive under extensive husbandry. They exhibit a high level of parasite resistance, are efficient foragers, and sows make excellent, calm mothers. Their ease of management combined with paramount meat quality makes the Mulefoot a great choice for anyone seeking to raise swine.
