Earthwalker Farm will be providing limited produce this year at local farmers markets. Our progress has been slow and almost backwards at times, but it's something you learn to work with and learn from.
Much of what we have been doing is increasing the humus level in our very alkaline soils. With PH 9+ and soils nearly devoid of organic matter, progress could not be made until at least some areas had sufficient humus from organic inputs to make available nutrients present in the soil. All inputs are local and may be as simple as tumbleweed straw, mixed soft and hardwood wood shavings and hay, with leaves in vast amounts collected from a nearby town applied in the fall. Carbon is king in these soils and without the buffer provided by the breakdown of the inputs, applications of anything organic or not is a waste.
