ECO City Farms is a nonprofit educational urban farm that works to proliferate urban and community-based farming in Prince George's County, Maryland. We work to meet the demand for accessible nutritious food, while improving the local economy by creating meaningful jobs involved in growing and distributing healthy food in our neighborhoods. We grow great food, farms and farmers. At our farm in Edmonston, Md., we produce sustainably-grown vegetables and healthy soil through intensive urban farming replicating a healthy ecosystem. Our work is focused on providing sustainably grown food, nutrition education, farm training and advocacy for food justice to those in our immediate Port Towns communities of Prince George's County, Md.
Hands-on involvement in our farm and composting operation gives people a genuine understanding of, and stake in, our work and its success. We hold weekly volunteer hours on Saturdays from March to November and partner with area groups such as the Port Towns Youth Council to engage summer youth apprentices. We teach an Urban Agriculture Certificate program at the farm with Prince George's Community College, an intensive 22 hour weekend intensive course of hands-on experiential education.
Prince George's County residents can take advantage of our winter and summer CSA programs, and our food is also sold year round at the Riverdale, Md. Farmers Market. See our website at www.ecocityfarms.org for more information and details.
ECO is currently building its second farm in Bladensburg, Md., in the center of a lower income apartment complex. This 3 acre farm will provide food for a low income CSA and farm stand which will serve senior citizens, lower income and middle income residents which live adjacent to the farm. This summer, ECO will also be hosting its Summer Youth "Seed to Feed" program, which provides local youth with hands on farming, cooking, nutrition and creative learning opportunities.
