Our 'User-Friendly' freshly picked edible cactus leaves are from the variety called Nopalea Grande. This is the most excellent of all edible leaved cacti we have come upon. We usually pick the nearly spineless leaves of this plant at a six to ten inch size. This size is very good for fresh cooking, and should be refrigerated upon arrival. They should last for a couple weeks or so lightly wrapped in the refrigerator.

Although these are very nearly spineless, they should still have a bit of preparation before eating. Like any vegetable they should be washed with a scouring pad. Then a knife can very gently trim along the leaf edges. Visit our website at www.rivenrock.com to see video.

We grow our cactus plants miles from the nearest conventional agriculture. Our plantings are on a terraced hillside using a mixture of organic techniques and tools both ancient and modern.

We are surrounded by miles of California Live Oak chaparral/woodlands.

These plants are from the Yucatan Peninsula originally. It is believed that these same plants were cultivated by the Maya half a millennia ago. We grow them under many of the same conditions, with loving hand care of the soil, proper fertilization using organic techniques, and hand selection and packing of the leaves. Enjoy the best.
