After 30 years of growing for the Downtown Farmers Market of Manhattan as well as two local food suppliers, I now grow sugar snap peas, the edible pod, which I bring to market in late May in to June. Then I will have cucumbers of the burpless variety by some time in July followed by my favorite and "specialty", Crimson Sweet watermelon. They are usually ready by early August. And I will have several varieties of Cantaloupe. I market my produce at the Manhattan Farmers Market sown by the Rile County court house on Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons at Cico Park. For me it has been a very satisfying experience to produce and market fresh vegetables. The Farmers Market is quite an enjoyable phenomenon, socializing with other producers, past customers, long time friends and new acquaintances. I hope to list items in season and the target market dates, the weather and Mother Nature permitting. Try the Manhattan Farmers Market, the second oldest in Kansas.
My first planting of the edible pod sugar snap peas will be planted this last week of February. I plan to have two more plantings in the next 4 weeks and be picking in late May or early June, Mother Nature providing.
