Tolstoy Farm is nestled in the folds of Mill Canyon, a coulee near Davenport, Washington. The canyon is home to two certified organic vegetable farms and several certified organic market gardeners, a 240 acre land trust/intentional community, various private homesteads and affiliated neighbors. Mill Canyon is an ancient, glacier-cut formation, quite distinct in appearance from the vast, treeless, wheat-farmed plateau which makes up much of southeastern Washington. Here in the canyon, the land contours are rich and varied. Open meadow gives way to pine-fir woods and desert chaparral. Roosevelt Lake (formed by the Grand Coulee Dam flooding the Spokane River), is five miles down the road. The climate is arid.
