The grocery store is located on the historic Third Street and inside the reconstructed historic interior of a 1912 building. To strengthen our idea to connect people to place, we used lumber from the forests at the farm of a store owner. The two store owners include a local certified organic farmer, Blaine Tornow, Moonshadow Farm, and a local architect, Kevin Korpela, whom combined their talents and energies to create a utilitarian, sophisticated, historic, and modern interior.
Our store is located on Wausau's most interesting urban block: we're located next to Sweet's on Third and down the street from Jeannie's Coffee and Janke Bookstore. We've also a big storefront window with views to Back When Cafe, Black Purl Knitting Shop, Studio E, Et Al's Read and Unread Books, Rillings Shades, Surroundings Interiors & Furnishings, La Paul Furs, Evolutions in Design, and the Bridal Shop.
The store also has a direct farm to market connection because Mr. Tornow runs a family farm, Moonshadow Farm, MOSA-Certified Organic since 1997. The farm grows 20 acres of 18 varieties of medicinal herbs and 10 acres of mixed vegatables. Two greenhouses produce early tomatoes, peppers, cukes and summer squash, usually with harvest beginning in mid May and winter salad greens from Oct. - April. The farm sells at farm markets in central and northern Wisconsin and runs a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program with 9 drop locations and 4 CSA choices: spring greenhouse share, standard and large summer shares and a winter storage share.
Downtown Grocery is a neighborhood grocery store linking local farms to a local market to connect place to people. The store is run by a dedicated, determined, and creative grocery team willing to share their food ideas while offering a basic need: good food for preparing good meals at home to share with good family and friends!
Downtown Grocery is "...a grocery store with real food!"
