The People's Grocery

The People’s Grocery will be an organic grocery store, community center and youth business training program based in West Oakland, CA. The purpose of the People’s Grocery is to promote and support sustainable local economic development and community self-reliance by increasing neighborhood accessibility to healthy food, strengthening the capacity of local food production, providing employment and training for low-income youth, and supporting the creation and growth of additional locally-owned businesses. The organizing and development of the People’s Grocery began in November of 2001. We are currently in the research and development phase of this project and are moving into the implementation of the People’s Grocery mobile market, a grocery store on wheels providing affordable food to West Oakland residents.
