Journeyman Farmer -- Resident
Hidden Villa is a nonprofit educational organization that uses its organic farm, wilderness, and community to teach and provide opportunities to learn about the environment and social justice. Hidden Villa stretches over 1600 acres of open space in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 40 miles south of San Francisco. Our mission is ?to inspire a just and sustainable future through our programs, land, and legacy.? We are seeking an energetic, responsible team player to fill our Agriculture Intern position. The position runs from the beginning of February until the end of the following January.
The Journeyman Farmer will work in conjunction with the Farm Manager on field and greenhouse production to provide for the Community Supported Agriculture program, the Community Services Agency of Mountain View and for the farmer?s market. Responsibilities will focus on staffing the farmer?s market stand and training and supervising first year interns, summer interns, and volunteers. This is a higher-level internship position aimed at providing the supportive environment within which new farmer?s can gain the skills needed to operate independently.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday (8-5 minimum) with seasonal extended hours.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
? Supervising agriculture interns and volunteers in day-to-day work on the farm
? Manage the farmer?s market stand
? Work together with the farm manager to maintain production levels of sufficient quantity and duration to support the needs of the CSA, CSAMV, and farmer?s market
? Assist in organizational tasks for the farmer?s market and the CSA including helping with the weekly newsletter
? Assist in training environmental education interns, camp staff, and volunteers in the use of the lower fields for education programs
? Work with the farm manager to maintain farm equipment and irrigation systems
? Participate in Hidden Villa meetings, community programs, and donor events
? Hidden Villa is an organization that often times must change priorities. It is therefore a condition of employment that employees of Hidden Villa must be flexible and willing to take on other responsibilities for the good of Hidden Villa
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age with the ability to work outside performing manual labor. Valid driver's license and clean driving record (no major infractions) strongly preferred. Documentation establishing your right to work in the United States is required along with submission of fingerprints and the subsequent successful background check.
A candidate with production experience in organic agriculture for approximately one year is desired. Candidates should have supervision experience as well, preferably in a teaching role. Strong customer service skills, computer literacy, and business and marketing experience are desired as well.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is a full-time, year-long, residential, exempt position. A stipend of $525/month is provided. Benefits include: housing, seasonal produce, meat & dairy products from the farm when available, holiday time, vacation, and sick leave. This position also receives 25% of produce profits from weekly Farmer's Markets under their supervision. No medical, dental or vision benefits are provided, however an additional stipend of $100/month is included to offset any medical expenses interns may incur. Obtaining coverage is the responsibility of the intern. Hidden Villa is a non-smoking environment.
