P.O. Box 622
Vineyard Haven, MA 02568
Contact: Kaylea Moore/Melinda Rabbitt DeFeo
A program of Island Grown Initiative, Island Grown Apprentice is a competitive apprenticeship for potential career farmers. Located on the Island of Martha?s Vineyard, this unique farming opportunity combines hands-on experience with education to prepare successful candidates for a future in farming.
Last season, the program supported four apprentices paired with four Island farms. Each apprentice worked with two farms to cultivate new skills in poultry processing, animal husbandry, dairying, crop production and more.
This coming year, we aim to increase the number of apprentice positions as well as the diversity and number of farms.
In 2013, we are looking for six to eight apprentices to work on farms producing a wide-range of products and utilizing sustainable land strategies such as:
- pastured poultry, turkey and pork
- small dairy operation
- large mixed vegetable farm with a wholesale/retail farm stand
- free-range egg production
- pastured beef, lamb and wool production
- herb production for value added products
- cut flower operation

This apprenticeship is unique, in that in one season you will experience different farm operations and will be exposed to different business models. The small size of the Island and our collaborative agricultural community provides new farmers with an unusually rich and diverse learning environment.
The terms are as follows: guaranteed housing, defined as a bedroom with access to kitchen and bathroom and monthly stipend supplemented with farm produce. Educational components include on-farm training and mentoring through working one-on-one with the host farmers. Apprentices will participate in organized weekly educational programs and farm visits to provide different perspectives and approaches to agriculture across the Island.
The season can run from as early as April until the end of November depending on the farm?s needs.
Skills Desired: Experience is not as important as enthusiasm, strong desire to learn, and a willingness to do repetitive physical labor in all kinds of weather.
App Deadline: February 15, 2013
