Cowpooling?    (Posted Wed, Jan 28 '09 at 08:50 CST)

Has anyone tried cowpooling before? Cowpooling is the practice of a group of neighbors purchasing a cow together and dividing the meat among their families.

How might I get in touch with people who have done this or might be interested?

Helen, the following website has some nuts and bolts about this subject at....

http://www.realmilk.com/cowfarmshare.html

I hope you can pull this off in your area.

Don't look for the cow with the most milk, get one with the "best" milk. Brown Swiss would have a much higher chance of having A2 milk than a Holstein. (google A2 milk for why it should be our "milk" of choice.

Feed it the cleanest minerals you can find (Redmond Salt, an Ancient sequestered source, before man's impurities) and good grass and hay (the higher the brix level the better).

Yes, we have several families who either don't want or can't hold an entire cows worth of meat. So they buy a beef from us, go through a cutting sheet and choose what cuts, the size, thickness, etc and we have it processed and delivered to them. They then have a giant meat party and divide the meat among themselves. They tell me it seems like Christmas when the boxes start arriving.....

The term you are looking for is purchasing a whole or half ( side) of beef. It should pull up ranches in your area offering them.

Cheers,
Kassandra

My Great Grandparents used to talk about the "Meat Ring" when they lived in Canada just before the depression. Each family in the "Ring" took their turn butchering one of their steers and sharing it with the others.
It allowed everyone to have fresh beef at a time when refrigeration was an issue. I think the idea would work well now to save money.

I'd only do that with an already cut up cow from the local butcher. If the other party only had to cut a check that moment and it was a done deal.

Just like partnerships, relationships go south when money is involved. Most people would loose intrest after a time and leave someone hang'n. That's been my experence

We sell beef to customers this way. We take a deposit of 100 dollars per quarter before processing and the customer pays the rest when they pick up the meat. I am taking 3 cows to be processed in a couple of weeks and the meat is going to be divided among 12 families who have gone together to purchase the meat and each are buying a quarter. I have also sold to people who split a half 4 ways, but they did the dividing. We will have the slaughter house divide the meat if the customers are purchasing quarters. We also have a license to sell inspected meat and sell by the individual cut if people don't want to buy in bulk.
