Pullets or Hens in MT    (Posted Thu, Feb 19 '09 at 04:29 CST)

I'm looking for two or three pullets or hens to purchase for backyard eggs in Montana. I'm looking for a standard size breed that is cold weather hardy. I'd also welcome any advice about what types of chickens do well and lay plenty of eggs in the cold white north.

We just got into Silver Wyandottes. We got them as chicks in mid-October (don't ask why - should have waited until March or April as we usually do). Anyway, they have the rose comb, are very pretty and the poulets are already laying. We also have Cornish Rock - they slow down in the winter but do continue to lay. We turn on the light around 7 a.m. and off by 5:30 or 6.

I've had really good luck with any of the wyandottes but also the Delawares. And I got a helpful hint from an old timer. Oatmeal mash in winter. I mix oatmeal and cook it up with fruit but with milk replacer for lambs. Gets them going every time and I live in SD.

It also helps to put a bit of red pepper in the feed .. keeps them warmer! :)Sharon
