I'm a small scale farmer using organic methods and no pesticides. All my garlic varieties have been given to me from local seed stock and I have grown my purple stripe variety since 1989.
This Red Italian variety was brought to the area in the 1920's from Italy. It is an artichoke type softneck and has produced large heads this year. I've been growing this variety approximately 5 years now. While this variety came in second in our taste test it outlasted the number one choice in storage by 3-5 months.
Each braid is hand selected and crafted for size to taper from 1.75 inch diameter to 2.25 inch diameter and are approximately 18 inches long with 16 heads (the heads section is approx. 12 in long). The garlic will last into the spring (and sometimes later) depending on growing and storage conditions.
