Also called Perennial Chinese Chives, Chinese Leeks or even just Leeks. This is probably a reference to the blades of this Chive which are flat & resemble little leek leaves. It's scientific name is Allium tuberosum. Allium is the Greek name for garlic & tuberosum refers to the rhizome, which is tuberous.
The finely chopped blades are great added to stir-frys or egg dishes. They are wonderful in cheese biscuits. Garlic Chives can have a mild onion with a stronger garlicky flavor, but can usually be used in any recipe calling for chives. Garlic chives are a good choice for people wanting to shy away from full-flavored garlic.
Garlic Chives are a mild antibiotic and have been used as an appetite stimulant, a mild laxative, to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and to prevent miscarriage as well as for anemia, bleeding, internal mucous, tuberculosis, urinary problems and general debility. It has been used in Chinese medicine for colds, the flu and lung congestion.
