German Red is a Rocambole garlic, which is a stiff-neck type. Most bulbs are not as large as Music, but it has more cloves per bulb. Each clove is fairly large, and easy to peel. It is an excellent keeper. Bulbs will stay firm into June most years, if stored under ideal conditions, which means "cool and dry".
The flavor is spicier than Music, but not overpowering.
It grows well in colder areas of the country. It grows best in rich, loamy soil, under a straw mulch. For those interested in growing, a fact sheet is included.
The bulbs sold as "seed stock" are selected for their size, wrapper development and perfection. Starting with larger cloves results in larger bulbs, as long as the other parameters for growing are met. Orders contain a range of large and medium bulbs.
"Culinary" bulbs are smaller in size, and may be a bit less perfect looking. They are viable, if you want to try growing them.
Small German Red bundles contain a about 24oz. of garlic. Large bundles are about 2.25#. Bundles are tied with sea grass or hemp string for a natural, rustic look. Hanging bundles serves a purpose; it is an ideal way to keep garlic for long term use. Please, never refrigerate garlic!
