Goldenrod Tea recommended For Treating Respiratory Conditions and Kidney Pain.

Commission E tested both European goldenrod (virgaureae) and other forms (herba), and didn't differentiate between them in its evaluation.

Goldenrod is a diuretic, flushing out the urinary tract, which makes the herb valuable for treating urinary tract infection. It's also used to treat kidney and bladder stones.

Commission E found that the herb has mild antispasmodic qualities and can help prevent inflammation of the urinary tract; its recommendations are drawn from goldenrod's long history of use in German medicine.

The daily dose is 6-12 grams of the dried herb, the equivalent of 2-4 teaspoonfuls. Be sure to take it with lots of water. Goldenrod tea can be made by taking 3-5 grams (1-2 teaspoonfuls) of crushed herb, steeping for 15 minutes in hot water, and drinking it 2 to 4 times per day between meals.

Cautions: Do not take Goldenrod if you have chronic kidney disease. Do not use it to flush the urinary tract if you have swelling caused by heart or kidney problems.

Goldenrod is unlikely to cause problems when taken at usual dosage levels, but be sure to drink lots of fluids while using it. Goldenrod shouldn't be used if you have edema (swelling) from heart or kidney conditions. It has no known interactions with other drugs.
