(Hydrastis canadensis)

Goldenseal is an herbaceous perennial, native to the eastern and central hardwood forests, where it prefers rich woods and the dappled shade of the forest understory. Goldenseal is easy to grow and does well in shade gardens. Once established it grows in large colonies, crowding out weeds. Makes a nice ornamental ground cover in moist, fertile shady areas. Medicinal: Tonic for mucous membranes, astringent, and anti-microbial.

Goldenseal is becoming threatened and endangered through parts of its range. We grow our plants by division of the rhizomes and from seed. Relatively easy to grow provided it is grown in rich, well-drained soil with about 75% shade.

Goldenseal rhizomes may be ordered from August through October for shipment as dormant roots in mid to late October.
