The Grantham Community Garden is a Messiah College student-inspired, student-led effort to demonstrate and promote real-life concepts of sustainable agriculture. We use this garden initiative as a means to educate students, faculty, and the broader community about the benefits of eating organic food and tapping into local farm economies for food resources. Through offering a CSA and occasionally holding/attending farmer's markets, we foster greater interaction between campus residents, regional farmers, and the surrounding public. We encourage shareholders to volunteer in our garden to get to know the students who care for the grounds. Besides utilizing Messiah College's land and resources to produce fresh and healthy cafeteria food, our campus garden allows the college to experiment with endeavors in sustainable agriculture that can be implemented in urban agriculture and international agriculture. At least one share and leftover produce is donated to a food bank or transitional housing unit in Harrisburg.
