Green Hills' history extends back to the 1930s, when Carrie Hawkins opened a roadside farm stand to supplement the family dairy's income during the Great Depression. Located on Route 80 in South Onondaga, the Green Hills farm stand offered the sweetest sweet corn and famous succulent tomatoes thanks to the valley's fertile soil. In the 1950s Carrie's son Clifford expanded the stand to meet growing popularity, and it grew in stages to its present size: the current building at 5933 South Salina Street, just a short distance off the Nedrow exit of Rt 81S, encompasses the older structures, and you can still see the roofs of older building stages and remnants of the original troughs the farm stand housed. The store's growth over the past century has been organic, and its character and people are unique in result. It has employed generations of local families, and is still run by the Hawkins family: Clifford's son Keith, grandson Gary, and Gary's wife Heather can be found in the store daily. And while the Hawkins family planted its last crop in the 1970s, Green Hills is a place devoted to local farmers, producers, and its historic community.
Green Hills began its business relationship with Byrne Dairy more than 30 years ago with nothing more than a handshake, and this way of doing business continues today. Green Hills features fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms through the growing season, Wake Robin Farm yogurt, Mercer's Dairy wine ice cream and an extensive selection of locally made products ranging from marinades, to chemical-free cleaners, and recently began selling "the best" reusable bag on the market (Chico bags), profits from which benefit Valley beautification projects. Green Hills focus is on fresh foods- with a wide selection of deli and bakery items made from scratch right in our store by team members that take great pride in their products, some working with us for generations. To further support local farmers, every Wednesday from 2-6pm, beginning June 16, Green Hills hosts an open local farmer's market, including certified organic growers, through the growing season. Visit our store for more details including a list of participating farms. Green Hills is a place steeped in tradition, family, local and organic growing.
