Growing Home

Growing Home is dedicated to growing food in a sustainable manner that preserves the environment, enriches the soil, conserves water, and reuses materials whenever possible. We are working to build the soil and create windbreaks, which will also provide habitat to local insects, birds and small animals.

Over the past 5 years Growing Home has developed a fully certified organic farm on the 10 acres of land that it owns in LaSalle County. In addition, Growing Home grows vegetables on certified organic urban farms in Chicago's Englewood and Back of the Yards neighborhoods We view the presence of urban green space as a means of improving the physical and mental health of all citizens.

All produce is grown organically -- which means no pesticides, no fertilizer and all natural.

Growing Home grows organic spinach, arugula, lettuce, baby greens, kale, turnips, mustard greens, radishes, tomatoes, soybeans (edamame), eggplant, bell peppers, green peppers, carrots, onions (red and yellow), scallions, zucchini, cucumbers, potatoes, garlic, collards, leeks, cilantro, basil, parsley, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, asparagus, mesclun salad mix, and annual and perennial herbs.

We also offer pure honey from on-site beehives, eggs from our pasture-raised chickens and worm castings from on-site vermiculture boxes.

The list goes on so stop on by one of our farms, subscribe to our CSA program, visit one of the several restaurants who cook with our produce, or take a gander at what we're offering at our farmer's market stands.

In addition to our CSA, Growing Home operates an innovative transitional employment program based in Chicago for homeless and low-income people. Our three farm sitesâ?”two on Chicagoâ?™s south side and one outside the city in Marseilles, ILâ?”act as literal and figurative classrooms as program participants learn job- and life-skills as well as gain valuable hands-on experience with organic agriculture.

We participated in this CSA in 2009 - summer and fall share. It was really great and we only switched for 2010 because the pickup location was no longer convenient after we moved.... [more]
