The Hairy Cow Farm is all about Highland Cattle, Garden,Chickens and Family. Not necessarily in that order. Some people know nothing about Highlands. Highland Cattle are the oldest registered breed of cattle with a Herd Book being published in 1885. The Scottish Highland Cattle Society was formed in 1884 and most of the cattle that were registered were black. The Highland breed has lived for centuries in the rugged, remote Scottish Highlands. The harsh conditions created a process of natural selection, where only the fittest and most adaptable animals survived to carry on the breed. American cattlemen recognized the qualities of the Highland and imported them to improve their current bloodlines in the 1890's. The Highland breed contributed in a great way to the success of the American cattle industry. We have many colors of Highlands on our farm today that are pasture raised and humanely treated. Then there are the free-range eggs available. We provide brown and a few green/teal eggs for purchase, all of which taste great! Most of our eggs are large-extra large. All chickens are raised on the farm and we do not have a rooster on-site. We have many Fall calves running around, a few spring calves being born. Weaning time is coming up on us. The Garden will be bursting with color soon. Call to come out to the farm to pick out a heifer calf as we start halter training in late spring or maybe to pick up some yellow squash and some grass fed ground beef. See you then!
