Hiamonee Farms' chestnut orchard contains Dunstan Hybrid chestnut trees. The trees are the product of the breeding by noted plant breeder Dr. Robert T. Dunstan, crossing the American trees with Chinese trees. The hybrid's Chinese heritage gave it resistance to the deadly chestnut blight, yet it retains the excellent size, flavor, and sweetness of the American parent. Our orchard was planted in 2001.
Chestnuts are very different from other nuts. Where other nuts have high fat content (oils) Chestnuts are high in complex carbohydrates. Chestnuts contain a high quality protein and from a nutrition standpoint are very similar to wheat and brown rice.
Hiamonee Farms is located between the Ochlockonee River and Lake Iamonia in Leon County, Florida. No pesticides are used on our trees. Due to short shelf life, our chestnuts are refrigerated from the time they are harvested until they are sold. If they are not used right away, they must be kept in cold, humidity-controlled storage. We provide instructions for storage and cooking.
We have the chestnuts if you have the open fire...

We're picking up chestnuts by hand every day, sometimes more than once a day - have to stay a step ahead of those annoying squirrels. Then every evening we sort them out and put them under refrigeration.
