The barren stems, stripped of their silica-impregnated covering are said to have diuretic and astringent qualities. Indians and early settlers used them for Dropsey. The Paiutes burned the ground leaves and used the ashes for cankers and sore gums. The Shoshones did the same thing with the dried and powdered roots.
