Island Grown Initiative (IGI) is a not-for-profit dedicated to supporting the small family farmers of Martha's Vineyard. We respond to farmers' needs and help raise eater-awareness about the importance of locally grown food.
After launching a community Pastured Poultry Pilot Program in the spring of '07, IGI has also succeeded in meeting the demand for local, humane, safe, clean, size appropriate processing by the operation of our mobile poultry processing trailer.
Island Grown Schools launched in January of '08 - connecting local agriculture to Vineyard schools via the classroom, school gardens, parent - community involvement, and professional development training opportunities for teachers and food service personnel.
IGI in collaboration with UMass Ethnic Crops program, is supporting locally grown Brazilian crops such as taioba, jilo, maxixe and abobora hibrida. Local farmers are trailing these crops now, and IGI works to support their entry into Brazilian markets, as well as traditionally non-ethnic markets and restaurants.
