Joe Pye was a Native American who helped the early colonists cure fevers & outbreaks of Typhus by teaching them to make an infusion of the leaves & roots of this plant. It was also used as treatment for rheumatiod arthritis.
Current uses include relief of associated symptoms accompanying influenza, relieving aches, pains and fever. It is thought to help clear the upper respiratory tract of mucous congestion. Taken internally, it can help clear built up waste in the digestive system by easing constipation. For flu symptoms, it can be mixed with yarrow, elder flowers, cayenne or ginger to make a tea. It can also be used as an astringent.

Joe Pye Weed may cause kidney & liver damage,internal hemorrhaging & severe intestinal problems. In large doses, it can be toxic if used in a casual way. E. purpureum (Joe Pye Weed) was listed in the U.S. Pharmacopeia from 1820-1842 as a diuretic, astringent, emetic & a cathartic (drastic purgative) in excessive doses. It contains sesquiterpene lactones, polysaccharides, flavoniods, diterpenes, sterols & volatiles.
For an infusion:Use 1-2 teaspoon of the dried herb to 1 cup boiling water. Infuse 10-15 minutes. Drink hot every half hour ONLY as directed by your health professional. For a tincture:2-4 ml 3 times a day as directed by your health professional.
Dry Leaves may also be burned to repel insects.
