(Solanum lycopersicum)

80 days. Open polinated Heirloom. Indeterm. Vigorous vines produce large bunches of huge pink tomatoes which are oxheart shaped, very meaty, and terrifically flavored - a good balance of sweet/tart. The tomatoes are relatively dry and have few seeds - perfect for processing. But also great on a sandwich. The plant is unlike other oxheart types - it is vigorous, has lush foliage, and larger leaves. Seed was given to us by our mailman, Mark Barton. He has been preserving this variety for years. He was given the seed by "Joe", an elderly man who has since passed on. Joe had grown the variety here in the Ozarks for many years. No one now knows what the original name was, so we call it "Joe's Pink." Seed is pricey as there are very few seeds per tomato (we collected less than 20 seeds out of a 1 1/2 lb. fruit!). But, it is worth it as this is a special tomato.

Germinated at 96% on 1/2/12.

Details:

Lifecycle:1    (0: N/A, 1: annual, 2: perennial, 3: biennial)
Heirloom:yes
Container Planting:no

Cultural Requirements:

Soil:Adaptable. Tomatoes need phosphorous, potasium, and calcium more than nitrogen. Bone meal is perfect. Excess nitrogen causes large vines with fewer, later tomatoes.
Propagation / Germination:Start seeds indoors 5 to 6 weeks before last frost. Keep soil lighly moist but not wet. Germinates best at 77 degrees, but anywhere from 60 to 85 degrees will work.
Sun:Full sun.
Water:Water weekly if necessary. Tomatoes appreciate a deep mulch, but wait until soil has warmed and vines are growing rapidly.
