Johnson County Local Food Alliance is a passionate food community of farmers, chefs, food stores, and people like you who are all committed to making local, healthy and fresh food more widely available (and eaten!) where we live.
Our goals include: Increasing local farmers capacity to reach a larger market Helping businesses meet the growing demand for local food by connecting them with area farms and distribution sources Fostering networking opportunities between area farmers Providing education for institutions such as schools, hospitals and daycare facilities to find ways to buy healthy, affordable, and local food for their cafeterias and meal plans Reducing our carbon footprint by sourcing food from local businesses and farms, and by distributing food regionally.
What we do: Buy Fresh Buy Local: JCLFA is the local chapter of Buy Fresh Buy Local, a marketing campaign to promote the purchase of local food. Field to Family: JCLFA's annual local foods harvest festival each September. The event features farm tours, cooking classes, workshops and many opportunities to eat delicious local food! Farm to School: JCLFA coordinates the Iowa City Community School District's Farm to School Chapter. We work to link schools with local farmers, provide an understanding of where our food comes from and encourage healthy eating habits.
