Horsetail controls internal and external bleeding and is an astringent, healing herb, but its main effect is on the genito-urinary system. It helps to rejuvenate the hair, nails and skin, increasing calcium absorption and helping to rebuild connective tissue.

It is the plant that absorbs the most gold from the soil than any other plant (minute amounts), making it useful in treating arthritis.

It contains silicic acid, potassium, aluminum salts, flavonoids, equisetolic acid and alkaloids. The silicic acid and the other chemical silicates make up about fifteen percent to total chemical constituent of horsetail, aside from the other compounds such as flavonoids, the phenolic acids, and the alkaloids, e.g. nicotine, and sterolds which are also present in variable amounts. The high silica content of the horsetail is responsible for most of the therapeutic effectiveness ascribed to the horsetail herb. This silica is largely soluble and is absorbed well in the body. Connective tissue regeneration is one of the main functions supported by the silica.

It is used internally for the treatment of prostate problems, urinary tract infection, kidney stones, incontinence, cystitis and urethritis, as well as arthritis and hemorrhage.

Horsetail can be an irritant and internal use should be for a short limited period only. It should not be used on young children, pregnant or breastfeeding women.

You may administer two to three cups of infusion, three or four times a week.
