Lavender HIll Farm of Niles, MI

Lavender Hill Farm is a 30 acre lavender and sheep farm in the rolling sandy hills of southwest Michigan near Niles. We currently have over 4500 lavender plants on 1+ acre including several varieties of English lavender and hybrid "lavandins". We sell fresh cut lavender, produce dried lavender products and distill our own fine quality lavender hydrosol (floral water) and essential oil. We also produce fine quality, varietal, lavender honey.

We have a small shop on the farm where we sell our handmade products by appointment or on advertised days (check our website). We also market these products at local farmers markets in periodically, such as the Niles French Market, in downtown Niles, and the Chesterton European Market. Check our website (www.thelavenderhill.com) for market dates.

We also raise Black Welsh Mountain Sheep, a heritage breed. These animals are exceptionally easy to raise and can produce a dense black wool, although generally it is bleached brown at the surface. The wool is suitable for spinning and felting. Black Welsh are also a good meat breed with a good meat to bone ratio. They are a small animal, and can survive on, and actually prefer pasture to grain. We sell Black Welsh breeding stock, wool and live animals when available.

Sights and Sounds of Spring

2009-03-22

This past week, as temperatures approached 60 degrees on several occasions, my emotions rode the rollercoaster ride that describes spring on the farm.  Elation over bulbs starting to pop, spring peepers peeping in the pond out back, doves cooing in the late afternoon warmth, songbirds competing for prime nesting materials, and kitties cavorting in the soft, greening grass, is tempered by an underlying angst over the growing list of time-dependent chores that need to be done to get ready for summer....
