We are a family run farm, with our children working right along beside us. We are mostly a market farm at this point, so come and visit us at the Telluride market on Fridays from 10:30-4:00, and in Aspen on Saturdays from 8:30-3:00. Farm internships are available.General Description: We are a family operated farm located in the beautiful North Fork Valley of Colorado, which is home to numerous organic farms and orchards. Hotchkiss is a rural community with a limited social life. Hiking, biking and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors are abundant. Our main income comes from direct selling of our product at farmers' markets . We have a total of 90 acres, with about 10 under production. Teamwork is the name of our game. We cannot accommodate children or pets. We are a smoke, drug and alcohol free farm and do not permit the use of these substances while here. By family farm, I mean our children work with us and are an integral part of what we do. They range in age from 10-17 years old. Not only will you be working with them frequently, but often they will be your managers, and they all know more about how things are done at Abundant Life than you will! They have been raised on the farm and are hard workers. If you are interested, please contact us by phone or email. Our season starts in April/May and ends in early November. Our personal interests include languages (Japanese, Spanish, sign language), reading, skiing, cooking, sewing, horses, and eating well. In the summer of 2012, the interns and our family had a lot of fun playing volleyball weekly! We hope to continue this tradition in the future. We also have a 1 acre pond available for recreation, which we also enjoyed with the interns in 2012. An exception to this would be our berries. Ask for details! This also does not include produce that we purchase for resale from other farmers. This fruit is available to you at our cost. There is a natural food store located across the street for your convenience in shopping for other groceries. City Market is 3 miles away. Interns will need to purchase their own grain, meats etc., and will be cooking their own meals. Interns may cook together if they so choose. Skills Desired: Love of the outdoors and tolerance to heat are a must! You should enjoy working with people, have a strong work ethic, be in good physical condition, and be committed to customer service. Attention to detail would be an enormous benefit, but again is not necessary. We encourage a farm visit if at all possible. Farming experience is not necessary. Educational Opportunities: You can expect to learn field production as well as greenhouse and hoop house management, planting, weeding, harvesting, post-harvest handling, weed and insect control, marketing, distribution, farmers' market set-up and sales, and customer service. We currently have 9 yaks and are happy to have added them to the grazing aspect of the farm. We planted an acre of peaches in the spring of 2010, a smaller portion in 2012 and 2013, and plan on planting some in the spring of 2014. We also added beehives for pollination in the spring of 2010. Starting in late July, we make value added products at a commercial kitchen that we rent, including fresh salsa, pickles, and pasta sauce. Plans are in motion to build a commercial kitchen in one of the buildings on the property, in the near future. Stipend: The stipend is $165/ week paid weekly based on 45 hours per week, however, this is pro-rated, and you will be paid according to how many hours are actually worked. In the spring and later in October, you can expect to work 45-50 hours/week. August 15st till the end of September is very busy, some weeks reaching 55-60 hours/week. This is only necessary during this busy harvest time. The growing season in Colorado is short, and the intensive harvest time of the heat loving plants is also! We have to work hard to get the harvest in when it is ready. We realize that these are a lot of hours, and are committed to working together as a team to get the job done. Housing: Housing is included. There is a newer bathroom facility, an old funky kitchen and a bunk house for sleeping in, plus two independent bedrooms. Tent camping is available if preferred (tents not included), with many beautiful options on our large property for setting up a tent.There is a washer for washing clothes and a clothes line to hang them to dry. Preferred method Of Contact: Email Internship Details: We are a small family farm seeking the help of a few hard working interns that have a serious interest in learning how to grow quality organic food. We need a solid commitment from May 1st until November 1st. We have tried shorter stays, but it does not work for our family or farm. If you would like to come earlier than May 1st, this has worked out well in the past. The earliest that would work out would be around April 5th. In exchange for your commitment and hard work you will receive the hands on experience needed in growing food organically as well running a small organic farm. We grow a large assortment of vegetable row crops including numerous varieties of heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, beets, sweet onions, Swiss chard, kale, garlic, potatoes, sun chokes, peppers, snap peas, cucumbers, basil, cilantro, lettuce, arugula, salad mix, sweet corn, haricots verts, spinach, and a delicious selection of specialty melons. We also grow strawberries, blackberries, yellow plums, peaches and wild apricots. You can expect to learn field production as well as greenhouse and hoop house management, planting, weeding, harvesting, post-harvest handling, weed and insect control, marketing, distribution, farmers' market set-up and sales, and customer service. We also have a small flock of laying hens and raised our first meat chickens in 2009. We have 1 acre of peaches planted in 2010, a smaller quantity in 2012 and 2013, plans to plant more in the spring of 2014, and an acre of yellow plums planted in 2006. You must enjoy working with people, have a strong work ethic, be in good physical condition, be committed to customer service, and tolerate working in the heat. Our main income comes from direct selling of our product at two area farmers' markets, one on Fridays and one on Saturdays. We recently started selling some items to Whole Foods, and we have a very small local CSA. We place a strong emphasis on QUALITY produce. We are seeking paid interns to work in assisting in field preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, post-harvest packaging, staking, watering, laying weed barriers, packing produce, marketing and distribution. We pay $145 weekly before taxes based on a 45 hour work week. You will be paid for actual hours worked. We expect a 45-60 hour work week, including early mornings and Saturdays with 1 - 1 1/2 days off per week. Harvest days are predictably long, so we ask that you not make plans for Wednesday nor Thursday evenings, as we often work late on those days. You may also enjoy the produce, as it becomes abundant. We have a small bunkhouse for sleeping in, two small separate bedrooms, as well as ample camping space if it is preferred. There is an old funky kitchen with a sink, stove and refrigerator equipped with basic dishes, silverware and pans. We also have a newer bathroom with two showers and a separate toilet room. We recommend bringing a vehicle if possible, so that you may get off the farm for errands and recreation.
