Ulysses Livestock Conservancy

(ulysses,PA)

The Conservancy is dedicated to the preservation of the American Milking Devon cattle , which presently number approximately 550 worldwide. ULC has operated since 1995, starting with one bred cow, and one yearling heifer. Over the years, it has been recognized for its excellence rearing quality livestock, and the herd was featured in the film"The Village", by M.Night Shayamalan. The current population on the farm includes 40 head of cattle, and 2 Great Pyranees guardian dogs. ULC maintains a supply of American Milking Devon semen, which is sold to AMDC owners. 2 bulls are presently available, one being an outbred bull and the other being a linebred bull. Also, the conservancy is the only owner of registered embryos. A small number are for sale. For those unable to own or care for cattle, but who wish to help the heritage breed conservation effort, ULC offers an "adoption program" of financial support. Those interested should contact the farm for program details and costs. Additionally, the farm has breeding stock available for sale year round. Spring born calves, heifers, bred heifers and bulls are available to qualified buyers. In the fall of 2007, ULC began selling grass fed , hormone free beef. All meat is from pure bred American Milking Devon bulls, hand raised on pasture and nominal grain. This pasture raised beef is higher in nutrition and is recognized for its flavor and lean (95%) qualities. The American Milking Devon has been recognized by the Slow Food Ark project for the quality of their meat. A very limited quantity is available. ULC is a member of the American Milking Devon Cattle Association (milkingdevons.org), and the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy(albc-usa.org). Those interested in the preservation of endangered heritage breeds are encouraged to contact those organizations for more information.
