The legacy of Hedgeapple Farm dates to 1731 when the property was granted to the Meredith Davis Sr. family. Since 1956, the Jorgensen family has operated a dairy farm and a beef farm on the property, beautifully situated along the Monocacy River. In 1997, the Jorgensens gifted a conservation easement to the Maryland Environmental Trust in perpetuity to protect the farm from furture development. The farm has grown to over 500 acres and is located just north of the historic village of Buckeystown, MD. All the acreage is in permanent grassland and is utilized as pasture and hay for the farm's herd of Black Angus cattle. All of our grass-fed beef is direct marketed through our on-farm retail market. The farm's one mile of frontage along the Monocacy River makes stewardship of the soil and water resources especially important. We work hard to implement best management practices for improving the water quality of the Monocacy and Potomac Rivers, along with the Chesapeake Bay. OUR BEEF All the beef we sell is raised at Hedgeapple Farm on a completely natural diet comprised of fresh pasture and hay along with essential minerals and vitamins and fresh clean water. We never feed grain to our cattle and we do not use feed antibiotics or growth hormones or any other feed additives or supplements on our farm. Some of the reported benefits of grass fed beef, compared to traditional grain fed beef include: 500% More CLA 400% More Vitamin A 300% More Vitamin E 75% More Omega-3 Fat 78% More Beta-Carotene The higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, contained in grass-fed beef, have been linked to increased cancer prevention in scientific studies. When our cattle are ready for harvest we use a USDA inspected processing facility to ensure that our beef is being handled in a humane, safe and healthy manner. Our beef is harvested, one at a time so we can offer the attention to detail that our beef customers desire. After harvesting, our beef is dry aged for at least 14 days to achieve the maximum tenderness and flavor possible, then it is carefully cut, vacuum packaged in clear plastic, and flash frozen. Our beef is sold by the pound in individual retail cuts.
