Support Local Agriculture

(New Buffalo,MI)

Organized in 2007, SUPPORT LOCAL AGRICULTURE (SLA)) celebrates the bounty of Berrien County and its farmers, chefs, restaurateurs and consumers. Berrien County, in Southwest Michigan, enjoys a diverse micro-climate along Lake Michigan. Because of its special locale and its fertile soil, Berrien County is the premier fruit grower-- peaches, apples, blueberries, strawberries-- in Michigan shipping to much of the Midwest. Additional crops include grapes, asparagus, corn, soy beans, tomatoes, zucchini, etc. The productivity of Berrien County farmers makes agriculture the second largest economy in Michigan. But the farmers, who are the stewards of these lands, and their farms, face an uncertain future. It is estimated that Berrien County will lose 48,159 acres of farmland by the year 2020. (1) SLA exists to promote and recognize small local farms by encouraging the support of all who are interested in the benefits of eating fresh, local, organic food. SLA advocates that by supporting the farmers, farmlands and their crops, we will all gain in health and nutrition.
