Tillers International

Tillers International raises Milking Shorthorn cattle, Merino sheep, and Alpine goats at its Cooks Mill 430-acre farm just southeast of Kalamazoo Michigan. We sell pasture-fed beef, lamb, and fiber, and trained oxen. Tillers' Cooks Mills site is also a Learning Center for farming with draft animals and rural skills such as blacksmithing and woodworking. Six or more Interns spend 3 to 9 months each year working the fields with oxen or draft horses, storing hay for winter, fencing fields, or constructing barns. Over 250 adult students attend classes ranging from Oxen Basics, or Bee Keeping to Timber Framing or Cheese Making. The farm and Learning Center include the Abbey Farmstead featuring animal-powered crop farming, the Springhill Farm focusing on animal husbandry of dairy and beef cattle. Additionally, one of the finest teaching blacksmith shops with 12 anvils and a wood shop with traditional tools for working wood. Tillers' list of classes in rural skills includes more than 40 options. The farm is also the annual meeting site for the Midwest Ox Drovers Association. In 2008, the farm hosted the national conference of the American Livestock Breed Conservancy. They awarded Tillers for its excellence in promoting heritage breeds of cattle. Farm tours including the Tillers Museum are available on Thursdays at 10 am. Please call ahead.
