We are an accidental family farm since we did not originally PLAN to farm when we purchased this property. Somewhere along the way we transitioned from growing our own food to growing for market. We now operate 12 months out of the year and employ 9-12 full-time field hands and a part-time delivery person. We grow a diverse cross section of specialty produce, such as THE (One-and-Only Knoll Farms) Green Garlic, figs, apricots, plums, nectarines, fuji apples,fuyu persimmons, herbs, salad greens, tomatoes, eggplant, cardoon, firewood and grilling fruit woods, to name a few. We sell primarily within a 100-mile radius of our farm, which includes San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Mountain View and Contra Costa County. Our customers include restaurants, bakeries, distributors which handle the restaurant trade and numerous specialty-produce and natural-food stores. In 2002, after almost two decades of organic certification, we dropped our certification to protest practices being considered by the National Organic Program as OK for organic certification. We also dropped the "O" word from our farm name and embarked upon an adventure that led us to our new farm name (Knoll Farms) and our own produce brand (Tairwa Produce). In 2009 we renewed our organic certification thru Organic Certifiers in Ventura, CA. On January 1, 2011, we became an LLC. Our commitment to soil as a living organism and a predominantly-local customer base remain unchanged. It goes without saying that we use no pesticides, no herbicides, no fungicides, no 'cides of any kind to produce the food we grow. We are forming a CSA for our local, East Contra Costa area.
