Spring Hill Farm
(Ruther Glen,VA)Thompson's Spring Hill Farm in northwest Hanover County has been in existence over 100 years. My mother, currently owns the original farmstead and my family lives adjacent it. My great-grandfather purchased the original SHF acreage in the late 1800s. Since that time, our family has harvested timber, and had a self-sustaining farm until my grandfather died in 1981. My great-grandparents and grandparents had livestock, poultry, worked with neighboring farms, and brought electricity and phone lines into the area. Because we have continuously harvested timber for the past 100 years, our place was designated by the Commonwealth in its Virginia Century Farm program. January 2009, the old farmhouse burned down, but the attached loft which received minimal fire damage and water and hopefully will be fixed. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) allows the community to be part of the process. Members help pay for seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment maintenance, labor, etc. In return, the farm provides, to the best of its ability, a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season. Becoming a member creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it. If you are interested in purchasing a for the 2013 growing season, please let us know. We still have a few memberships available. A season is approximately 15-20 weeks long, depending on growing conditions. The 2013 was a decent season. We had a decent amount of rain, but still had problems with garlic, probably due to the fact it was a bad season for garlic earlier and it was hard finding seed the previous fall. Now this year, we planted a lot of garlic, but the harsh winter this year can spit them out of the ground. With last year behind us, we are looking forward to a bountiful and wet growing season, beginning about mid-May.
