Mealor Family Gardens
(Decatur,GA)Mealor Family Gardens is located in Decatur's Glen Haven neighborhood, off Covington Highway .. Just outside I285. We are Certified Naturally Grown (naturallygrown.org) farmers, and take great pride in providing fresh, sustainably grown, vegetables, fruits and berries. We make our own compost on site from spent brewery grains( from Twains), veggie scraps, leaves, hay, sawdust, wood chips, etc -- and we never use pestisides. We now have a few chickens for eggs, entertainment and as an on-site source of fertilizer.. Son, Ben, and his boys Cooper and Porter, live on site at 4282 Mercer Rd., and the house at 4246 is being renovated -- for intern housing and a peaceful retreat for Bill (dad/granddad). Daughter, Stephanie Corder -- Ben's sister is very much involved as a design and gardening consultant -- she also prepares wonderful jams, jellies, tarts and prepared foods using our products and those of other local farmers for sale at the Saturday Decatur Farmer's Market. We had a successful garden number one in the summer of 2009 .. tomatoes, corn, okra, purple hull peas, eggplant, cantelope and watermelon -- enough to sell at the Decatur Farmer"s Market that fall. Since then, we have planted apple, peach, pear and pecan trees, 10 muscadine vines -- 30 blueberry bushes, 40 raspberry bushes and a few figs. We planted Garlic, onions and shallots and strawberries in November and December, and will soon be planting tomatoes, summer squash, corn, okra, eggplant, beans, purple hull peas, cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelon, sweet potatoes and winter squash. Our farm is very much a work in progress (much work still needs to be done) -- and we welcome visitors and volunteers -- please call first. Bill's dream is of a small urban version of his grandfather's farm in Cleveland, Georgia in the 60's that provided so many wonderful childhood memories. Granddaddy Holcombs farm was truly sustainable -- almost everything was grown on the farm, and all by-products went back into the earth! We sell at the Wednesday and Saturday Decatur Farmer's Markets, have a small CSA ... and, of course, our extended family enjoys just picked fruits, berries and veggies from our Gardens:)
