(Portland,OR)Winona Farms From March thru September, all sorts of herb and vegetable starts will be available. Specialties are rare peppers, heirloom tomatoes, expansive selection of herbs - particularly of basil. Additionally, lettuce, brassicas, onions, strawberries, tomatillos, eggplants, and beneficial flowers. What started as a lark to grow some interesting peppers and tomatoes grew into a business as I sold the extra plants on Craigslist. In 2011, I tried my hand at grafting heirloom tomatoes onto disease resistant and vigorous rootstock. The results from this processed were impressive. This year, I'll increase my grafted stock of tomatoes and will extend into grafted eggplants as well. Some exciting new tomatoes varieties will be featured in 2012 that include Valencia, Sudduth Strain Brandywine, Djena Lee's Golden Girl, and the buzz-inducing Indigo Rose. My love is in the pepper arena. I'll have all kinds of sweet peppers (bells and other specialty sweet varieties) but also a multitude of spicy chilis. My all-time favorite is the Manzano pepper, and I'll have red, yellow, and orange versions of this excellent pepper. I'm also trying some new varieties like Pimiento de Padron, Wenk's Yellow Hot, Jimmy Nardello's, and volcanic fire of Butch T Trinidad Scorpion. Basil is the other main focus. I'll have lot's of 'sweet' stock in Genovese & Italian Large Leaf, but also Siam Queen, Thai Sweet, Christmas, Dark Opal, African Tree, Ararat, and a few other specialty varieties. I'll be back at Tigard Farmers Market and Barbur Foods in 2012. I'm beginning to look for a couple other retail outlets and perhaps one more market to attend. Cool weather starts will be available in the beginning of March. These will include lettuces, brassicas, onions, strawberries, and cold-tolerant herbs.
