Down To Earth u-Pick Garden

(Sitka,AK)

Down To Earth u-pick Garden is possibly the smallest u-pick garden in the US. It is located on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska. Small residential lots are nestled tightly together at the base of majestic mountains, right next to the sea. The average rainfall is 100 inches a year and the temperature is mild due to ocean influence. There is no agricultural land and everything is either barged or flown into town. Vegetable gardening is a real challenge and many people who live there have never seen a carrot growing in the ground or have picked and eaten a pea right off the vine. We grow small amounts of a large variety of vegetables to educate and encourage other residents to try to grow more of their own food. We grow greens, carrots, peas, rhubarb, beets, potatoes, onions, garlic, green beans, tomatoes, herbs, celery, fennel, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi, cauliflower, raspberries, strawberries, radishes and radish pods, asparagus.a few flowers and free range duck eggs. We usually open for business mid-June and close down late August. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 11:00 to 6:00. Children are welcome but may not run through the garden or chase the ducks. For the best experience it is recommended that each child is accompanied by an adult.
