Live Springs Farm

We are now offering an apprenticeship position for 2011! Please see our website for details.

Live Springs Farm is a diversified farm using biodynamic and organic practices. The farm has beautiful contours and bounty from multiple natural springs to rolling hills, pastures, and fields, to hardwood forests, creeks and streams, and abundant wildlife.

We grow certified organic grains, hay, and legumes while also using biodynamic preparations and working with biodynamic agricultural practices. We currently raise heritage breed pigs on pasture as well as in the woods where they can forage for acorns, hickory nuts, and pecans. We also raise pastured poultry which enjoy a new tasty patch of grass, legumes, worms, grasshoppers, etc. everyday when we move their pens. We also raise laying hens on pasture which are rotated around the pastures after the cattle have grazed. We have just started with our cattle herd, a mix of breeds that are small framed and able to produce offspring for grass finishing. We rotate the cattle daily to new pasture. We appreciate our animals very much and are very thankful for the gifts they give us in turn. Much of what we grow on the fields is used to raise our livestock this makes our farm much more sustainable and gives us a certainty to the quality of feed our animals eat. We sell pastured pork, chicken, and eggs through several local vegetable CSA's, farmers' markets in the St. Louis area, St. Louis area restaurants and grocery stores, and off our farm in Illinois.

We work the fields using a tillage implement called the Eco-dyn. This piece of equipment allows us to do all of our field work with only one implement, from shallow tillage, to soil loosening, to harrowing, to planting, etc. while also allowing us to do some of those steps simultaneously. This reduces the number of passes over the field thus reducing our diesel use and soil compaction. It also allows us to work creatively planting more polycultures and working to diversify our crop rotations.

We love the land and farming and are grateful for our opportunity to be part of an emerging eco-agriculture where both farmers and consumers are treated fairly.
