Llamas originate in the Andes Mountains of South America where they are used for packing, guarding and their beautiful fiber.
Here at River Valley Farm, our Guard Llamas Red and Zorro spend their time keeping watch over our flocks of sheep. They keep them safe from predators like coyotes, foxes, bears, bobcats and lynx.
Red's roving is superfine with no guard hairs and very well suited for next-to-the-skin garments.
Zorro's roving, the Black/White Blended llama roving does contain guard hairs and is a blend of his black and white wool and garments made from this wool will be more comfortable if they are not worn directly against the skin.
This roving was produced by Ancient Threads Woolen Mill of Grafton, NY where they are committed to producing a high quality product in an ecologically friendly manner. The raw fleece has been gently washed using a vegetable oil based soap, air dried and then carded into roving - ready for your next hand spinning or craft project.
All our Llama roving is blended 80/20 with our own Cormo wool to allow for memory in the resulting yarn. Garments made with our blended llama/cormo roving won't loose their shape when carefully hand washed.
The photo is a picture of Red; Zorro can be seen in the background at the big bale feeder with some of their charges.
