The LA Leadership Academy is a social-justice based charter middle school in the LAUSD. As of 2004, of the more than 1,000 schools and education centers that make up LAUSD, the LA Leadership Academy is the only school in the district that prepares 3 freshly cooked meals a day in their own kitchen. Supported by the USDA Community Food Projects grant, the Farm to School program at The Los Angeles Leadership Academy augments the school's meal program, providing healthier options for students, many of whom are at risk for diet related health problems such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. This urban school, located in one of Los Angeles' most dense neighborhoods has a large immigrant population which often lacks access to fresh healthy foods. This Farm to School program is of particular significance due to its success in bringing healthy foods to a campus whose students otherwise would not have access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
