Loofah (Luffa cylindrica) sponges are fun and easy to grow! Loofah is an annual vining plant, and is a relative of gourds. The entire vining plant is absolutely gorgeous, and makes a nice attractive addition to any area where it has plenty of room. Direct sow your Loofah seed in the garden after all danger of frost has passed for your area. Plant in hills of 3 seed to a hill, with the hills being spaced several feet apart. Plant 1/2" to 1" deep. Loofah vines grow very long (20 feet or more) so please plan for appropriately. These do nicely along a fence where they can climb. Keep the vines watered well, but do not allow them to stand in soggy dirt. The bright yellow flowers attract all types of pollinators. In my garden, they are a favorite of the local bumblebees, and also my honeybees. To Harvest: Leave the Loofah on the vine until the stem has turned brown, and the skin of the Loofah has turned brown. Allow to thoroughly dry in a cool, dry dark area. When completely dry, peel the skin off and shake out the seeds. The seeds can be saved for next year's crop of Loofah. The sponges are now ready for use! Loofahs can be a bit rough, so if you are growing these to use in the bath you may want to "process" them by boiling them in clean water first, them wringing them out and allowing to air dry. Remember that the more you use the Loofah, the softer its fibers will get.
